Psychotherapy

taking steps toward creating the life you want becomes possible when you start to feel stronger and freer inside.

marriage and family therapists specialize in assisting individual adults, youth, and families to facilitate prosocial and adaptive changes internally and in life's relational domains.

my approach to psychotherapy is collaborative and strengths-based.

humanistic mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and existential therapies are the treatment modalities that i draw from to help you connect with and mobilize your own internal strengths and resources.

humanistic mindfulness-based therapy: this approach has much to offer, particularly when patients ask for "tools." mindfulness skills can help you tolerate frustration or emotional distress, withstand cravings or urges, ground or center yourself when overwhelmed, or generally reduce the impact of everyday stress.

cognitive behavioral therapy (cbt): this approach posits that people's actions are motivated by their thoughts (&visa versa). for a patient who seeks a therapist's help with feeling stuck in behaviors that are detrimental to health and relationships, a cbt approach might help that person to become more aware of the thoughts associated with the unwanted or troublesome behaviors - and to work on changing the thoughts.

another way cbt might help support some desired or necessary change is by working on ways to activate or increase behaviors that improve your mood - or by replacing behaviors that are detrimental with alternatives that may result in more positive outcomes.

the objective, in either case, is to practice the cbt skills that help make small changes consistently, until new patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating to oneself and others are established.

psychodynamic & existential therapies: because relationships are so important to the human experience, early or persistent difficulties in relationships (including but not limited to traumatic experiences, intergenerational trauma, and complex trauma) can have profound and lasting effects on one's perception of self and others, orientation to the future, or sense of possibility in life.

psychodynamic & existential therapies are insight-oriented and non-directive; they are guided by the gradual deepening of your own awareness of significant formative experiences and emotional truths. healing occurs through this process of exploration, while fostering your internal strengths and resources.
